LM2676 from national semiconductors can provide 3.3V,5V and a variable voltage output driving a max load of 3A. I have decided to use this chip for all of my regulators.
I am still not sure if I should use switching regulators for an FPGA. Are they good enough? or do i need LDOs / linear regulators? I remember reading somewhere that linear regulators offer less "noise".
The other problem using a switching regulator is the use of an inductor.
hmmm.
next task: develop power schematics using eagle (cos its free!).
